Himara is a small coastal town with a big advantage: it makes the Albanian Riviera feel accessible without losing its local character. If it is your first visit, a little preparation helps—but do not plan every minute. Himara is better when you leave room for the sea to change your schedule.
Stay at least three nights
Two nights can work, but three or more lets you experience Himara properly. You can have one town-and-promenade day, one beach day and one outing towards Porto Palermo, Gjipe, Jale or the villages. Longer stays are even better if you want to slow down.
Bring the right beach basics
Pebble beaches make water shoes useful. Pack sun protection, a hat, a reusable water bottle and a dry bag for boat trips. Small coves may have fewer facilities, so do not assume you can buy everything once you arrive.
A car helps, but it is not essential
Central Himara is walkable and works without a car. A vehicle gives you more freedom for beaches and day trips, but make sure your accommodation has practical parking. If you are not driving, choose a central base and book local transport or tours when needed.
Learn the rhythm of the day
Start beach activities early, rest during the strongest sun and move into town later in the afternoon. Dinner tends to be an evening event, not something to rush. If a restaurant looks busy, that is usually a sign to slow down rather than leave immediately.
Respect the coast
Stay on safe paths, do not leave rubbish on the beach and follow local safety advice about sea conditions. The hidden places are special precisely because they are not overbuilt. Travel in a way that keeps them that way.
For a first trip to Himara, keep the plan simple: stay near the sea, choose one good outing each day and let the rest happen naturally.
