Himara is one of the best bases on the Albanian Riviera because a single day can include a beach, a village, a fortress and a scenic drive. The secret is not trying to fit all of them into one outing. Pick one direction and let the stops unfold naturally.
Porto Palermo and Llamani
Head south for an easy combination of clear water, a small bay and the Porto Palermo fortress. Stop at Llamani if you want a swim before or after visiting the castle. This route is ideal when you want a half-day outing that still leaves time for dinner back in Himara.
Gjipe Beach and Canyon
Gjipe is a good choice for active travellers. The dramatic canyon setting makes it feel different from the more accessible bays near town, but it needs preparation: water, sun protection, sturdy footwear and a realistic plan for the return walk or boat access.
Jale, Vuno and Dhermi
Go north when you want a mix of beach energy, stone villages and big coastal views. Jale is lively in summer, Vuno offers a quieter village stop and Dhermi gives the day a different beach atmosphere. Start early and do not over-plan the stops.
Qeparo and Borsh direction
Further south, the coastal route towards Qeparo and Borsh offers more villages and long stretches of Riviera scenery. It is a good option when you want to drive, take photos, stop for coffee and choose a beach based on the conditions that day.
How to plan a good day trip
Take water, offline maps and a cash backup. Check the weather if you are considering a boat ride, and avoid trying to reach every point on a map. The roads are beautiful but slow; the best day trips have enough empty space for a surprise swim.
Himara is not a place to race through. Choose one coastal direction for the day and the Riviera will give you more than enough reasons to stop.
