Himara vs Saranda: Which Is Right for You?

Himara and Saranda both sit on Albania’s Ionian coast, but they offer very different holidays. Saranda is larger, busier and more urban; Himara is smaller, slower and more centred on beaches and village atmosphere. The better choice depends on how you want your days to feel.

Choose Himara for a slower Riviera escape

Himara is better for travellers who want to wake up near the sea, visit a different beach each day and spend evenings in a small-town setting. The scenery is rugged, the pace is relaxed and the best moments tend to be simple: a quiet swim, grilled fish and a sunset walk.

Choose Saranda for city convenience

Saranda has more of a resort-city energy, with a larger choice of restaurants, nightlife, services and organised day tours. It can be practical if you prefer a busy waterfront and want a base with more immediate options. It is also commonly used for excursions further south.

Beaches: different styles, not a simple winner

Himara is stronger for beach-hopping around small coves, Livadhi, Jale, Gjipe and Porto Palermo. Saranda offers city beaches and access to popular southern destinations. Choose Himara if the beach itself is the focus; choose Saranda if you want beaches alongside urban convenience.

Getting around

A car makes both destinations easier, but it adds more value in Himara because the best beaches and villages are spread along the coast. Saranda is easier to navigate on foot in the central area, while Himara rewards travellers who are comfortable following scenic roads.

A simple decision

Pick Himara for authenticity, quiet evenings and a more natural coastline. Pick Saranda for a livelier base, broader services and a busier holiday rhythm. If time allows, combine them: use Himara for a few slower days, then Saranda for a different side of the coast.

Neither destination is “better” in every way. Himara is the choice for the traveller who wants the Riviera to feel like a break; Saranda is for the traveller who wants more happening around them.
